Enrichment Activities
There are a wide range of clubs and activities which enrich and
enliven school life. A variety of individuals and groups visit the
school including theatre groups, poetry performers, dance and drama
groups.
Study clubs are regularly offered as after school activities in
a wide range of 
subjects. Coursework and revision centres are provided
in the holidays to help students prepare for end of Key Stage 3 SATs
and GCSE exams. The school receives extra funding from the ‘Big
Lottery’ to provide extra curricular activities. We have consulted
with students over the kinds of activities they would like to see
us provide and the programme started in January 2006 for the next
three years.
The school believes that school journeys are an important part of
a student’s education. Every year we organise a variety of
school journeys and day trips. Over the years we have visited France,
Italy, Austria, Germany, America, Spain and Ghana.
The John Roan School has its own outdoor activity centre in the Lake
District. Built on 40 acres of land given to the school and left
in trust by Arthur Hope, a former Headteacher, the Braithwaite centre
is the focus for our outdoor activities allowing students to follow
a wide variety of outdoor pursuits. Here, students can experience
the beauty of this spectacular countryside, and the challenge and
excitement of outdoor life.
Regular trips from each college visit the Braithwaite Centre and
subject specific trips are organised. In the recent past there have
been Maths and Geography residential study trips.
During a College visit students take part in rock climbing, hill
walking, orienteering, nature rambles, canoeing, swimming and a host
of other activities. The students cook, clean and play together enjoying
the outdoor life and learning how to work collaboratively in teams.
For many students who visit Braithwaite it is a life changing experience
and the memory stays with them for the rest of their lives.

Maze Hill: 9.00 a.m. – 3.30 p.m. (including break and lunchtimes)
Westcombe Park: 10.00 a.m. -4.00 p.m. (including break and lunchtimes)
