Partnerships
Partnerships with Parents
The triangular partnership of students, parents and school working together is at the heart of The John Roan School approach to ensuring students achieve their full potential.
Every term starts with an Academic Review Day with students and parents meeting with tutors to set targets and evaluate achieving them. These days are complemented by subject based parents evening and Option Interviews in Years 9 and 11.
The John Roan News is published at the end of each half term and contains news, reviews and information about school events. Students, parents and staff are encouraged to contribute. We are developing an informative web site.
The John Roan School Association is open to all parents and teachers and meets regularly. It is a forum for discussing issues affecting the students’ education and also supports the school by raising funds and taking an active part in the life of the school.
Community Links
The John Roan School has always encouraged involvement with the local community and groups of students work with a variety of agencies including Maze Hill School, Charlton Park School, The Forum @ Greenwich, Trinity Hospital, The London Marathon, The Old Roan Association, The John Roan Association and a variety of charities. "The John Roan News" is sent regularly to parents and is a major source of information about school progress and activities. Work experience placements are organised for all Key Stage 4 students and there are strong links with local businesses.
PRIMARY/SECONDARY TRANSITION
We aim to make the change from primary to secondary school a positive experience.
At The John Roan School new students are quickly made to feel at home. They feel confident and able to make good progress in a challenging yet secure atmosphere.
We plan the induction of new students carefully; through visits
to primary schools, individual interviews with parents and students,
an introduction day in the Summer Term prior to transfer and a parents’ evening
for new parents. We look for each child’s strengths and achievements.
Our aim is to support, encourage and develop potential through close
monitoring, assessment and target setting so that good progress continues.
Students who are Gifted and Talented or who have Special Educational
Needs are identified early on and appropriate academic programmes
put in place.
