About the School

Pupils at school imageThe John Roan School has served the community of Greenwich for over 300 years. We have high expectations of the young people who make up the school and our aims are very clear - to maximise learning and achievement.

Over the centuries the Roan schools have provided high quality education for the young people of Greenwich. The school was established in 1677 by the Roan family who are Pupils at school imagerecorded as land owners in Greenwich from 1598. John Roan born in 1602 was a servant of the Royal Palace of Placentia (where Greenwich University is now located in the former Naval College). He served King Charles I. In his will he left his estates to educate the children of Greenwich.

The John Roan Foundation Trust still flourishes and supports the school in a number of ways from providing extra resources to the annual "Roan Exhibition Scholarship" which each year gives financial support for the two students with the best "A" level results. Archives of the school's history are kept and Founders Day celebrated annually.

We have a thriving Old Roan Association where former students and staff of The John Roan School continue to take a deep interest in the school providing work experience, advice and sometimes employment for our young people. All students automatically become members of the association and benefit from the extensive social and sporting facilities at the members clubhouse situated at the School Field.

LEARNING FOR LIFE

Pupils at school imageAt the John Roan School we offer the full statutory curriculum for all from 11-16. This ensures a balance of Technology, Art, Humanities, Languages, ICT as well as the Sciences, English and Mathematics and to mix both academic and vocational experiences.

In preparation for a life as active members of society, Citizenship, Work-Related Leaning and Careers Education are taught both across the curriculum and throughout the PSHE programme, supporting students in learning about their options and opportunities for the future as they grow up in a changing world.

All students who wish to progress into Post 16 education are offered a range of vocational and academic options at levels 1, 2 or 3 or a mixture of levels if appropriate.

We respect, value and reward the personal achievement of all our students, in their academic, pastoral and extra-curricular activities. We share the celebration of their success amongst all our school community.

EVERYONE COUNTS

The John Roan School is committed to creating an inclusive environment offering equality of opportunity for all students.Pupi9ls at School image The school is organised into six colleges, across the two sites, creating an environment in which each individual is known by the majority of staff. Every student is assigned a personal Academic tutor to ensure that they are able to benefit from the range of learning opportunities in a mixed comprehensive school. The Academic tutor monitors the academic and personal development of a small group of students and provides the invaluable link with parents.

We expect good behaviour of our students, increasing self discipline and a maturing approach to their studies. Our code of conduct, constructed by students, parents and staff is designed to ensure that all students are allowed to achieve their full potential in a safe secure environment.
